Who Does God Want me to Be?
Have you ever felt on your Christian journey like there was this pressure to be something you’re not? Certainly in following Jesus, there is some self-sacrifice involved. There is a whittling away of sin that God wants to do in your life, but that’s not what I’m talking about. That whittling actually cuts away the things that aren’t you and reveals the true you even more.
What I’m talking about is the pressure we face to live out our faith like someone else. Maybe we listen to a sermon or read a blog that leaves us feeling like we fall short just by being who we are. Maybe we see someone with incredible talents using that talent for God, and it leaves us wondering if God gave us any special gifts. Have you ever felt inadequate, like there’s no way you could measure up to the standard of a Christian you have in your head?
STOP. Let me show you some things from God’s word that are true about you:
You are Created in God’s Image.
“So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27)
“And yet, O Lord, you are our Father. We are the clay, and you are the potter. We all are formed by your hand.” (Isaiah 64:8)
“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb.” (Psalm 139:13).
You are Created Just how God Wanted You.
“Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.” (Psalm 139:14)
“I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5)
“And the very hairs on your head are all numbered.” (Matthew 10:30)
You are Created with a Purpose.
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” (Ephesians 2:10)
“But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.” (1 Peter 2:9)
Please hear this truth: God wants you to be YOU.
Nothing more. Nothing less. But what He wants is for you to be fully you. To be the “YOU” that He created you to be and not a lesser version of yourself. This is not a free pass to live in sin and say “This is who God made me to be.” No it’s not. The version of you God designed was holy and not sinful. Living sinfully is settling for LESS than God made you to be.
But hear this. In no way do you need to be just like the people around you. But you do need to find YOUR identity in Christ. You need to be you and every day you need to more fully become the “YOU” that God intended. So today, be set free from the pressure of being a Christian just like someone else. But don’t let yourself free from the pressure to be more fully who God made you to be.
Who does God want you to be? You. Fully, beautifully and perfectly…you.
